Women's History Month 2009

October 2009

Description of Poster

The background of the poster is white.

At the top of the poster, centred on the page in upper-case letters, are:

  • the one-line inscription October 2009 / Octobre 2009, written in black letters; and
  • below that is the two-line inscription, Women's History Month / Mois de l'histoire des femmes, written in sky-blue letters.

Below that is a set of silhouettes of human figures engaged in winter sport activities. The images are arranged in rows forming nine vertical bars and 10 horizontal bars, as follows:

  • the first vertical bar shows the silhouette of a snowboarder;
  • the second vertical bar shows the silhouette of a freestyle skier;
  • the third vertical bar shows the silhouette of an ice hockey player;
  • the fourth vertical bar shows the silhouette of a downhill skier;
  • the fifth vertical bar shows the silhouette of a figure skater;
  • the sixth vertical bar shows the silhouette of a bobsleigh athlete;
  • the seventh vertical bar shows the silhouette of a paralympic alpine skier;
  • the eighth vertical bar shows the silhouette of an ice sledge hockey player; and
  • the ninth vertical bar shows the silhouette of a speed skater.

Most of the silhouettes are light grey in colour but several are bright pink. The arrangement of the pink silhouettes creates an image of the woman symbol (a circle above an equilateral cross).

The image represents the range of winter sports in which women participate as able-bodied athletes and athletes with a disability. The woman symbol underscores the strength of women in winter sport, their growing determination to participate fully in society, and their willingness to take on the challenge of excellence and to be leaders and role models to others.

These visuals are underpinned by the text: Women in Winter Sports / Les femmes dans les sports d'hiver, centred on the page. Beneath that are the Web site addresses for the English and French Women's History Month sites, the Status of Women Canada signature and the Canada wordmark.

The bilingual poster is printed on a single side and measures 48.26 cm X 59.69 cm (flat), and 23.7 x 30 cm (folded in four).
