Theme: Community planning for women's economic security in rural and remote communities in Canada

Project Goal

To enhance opportunities for communities to take action to advance women's economic security and prosperity in rural and remote communities in Canada.

Project Objective

To support women and community partners to work together to develop and implement a community plan to promote women's economic security and prosperity in the local area.

Description

This project will address the range of institutional barriers and other factors that limit community efforts to advance the economic security and prosperity of women living in rural and remote communities.

The project will build partnerships and collaboration between community stakeholders (e.g., women, local, regional and provincial governments, community leaders, women's and community organizations, economic development organizations, businesses and business associations, financial and training institutions, etc.) to identify and respond to the specific economic needs of women.

Funding Available

Up to $300,000.

Duration

Up to 36 months.

Key Activities

1. Engage and establish working partnerships with:
   • local women;
   • women's and other community organizations, community leaders, stakeholders and potential allies (e.g., local, regional or provincial governments, economic development organizations, businesses and business associations, financial and training institutions).
2. Plan project and adapt to local needs:
   • conduct a gender-based analysis with respect to women's economic status and specific needs;
   • work with local women to identify their priorities, viewpoints and potential strategies for achieving economic security;
   • identify existing institutional mechanisms and supports as well as gaps (e.g. policies, programs, services, models, strategies, frameworks, planning and decision-making processes, etc.); and
   • identify promising practices to address the barriers to economic security facing women in rural and remote communities.
3. Develop community plan:
   • collectively identify gaps, priorities, opportunities, valuable resources and supports and potential strategies; and
   • collaborate to ensure tangible results for women and a coordinated community response to advance women's economic security (e.g., poverty reduction strategy) in the context of local need.
4. Implement community plan:
   • work with women, planning partners and community members to ensure effective implementation of the plan; and
   • focus on a priority component of the plan (e.g., coordination of community programs and services to avoid duplication and maximize resources to address gaps, improve access to supports and ensure their effectiveness).

Planned Results

• A community plan to advance local women's economic security and opportunities for prosperity has been developed.
• Project participants and stakeholders can identify the institutional and other barriers to women's economic security and are aware of local supports.
• Community partners and stakeholders collaborate to identify gaps, priorities and opportunities and to implement effective mechanisms, supports, strategies and/or solutions.
• Stakeholders have taken specific actions to address the economic situation of women living in their community.

Project Deliverables (after approval)

Month 4

• Detailed work plan and budget, results framework and performance measurement plan, risk management plan, and list of project partners including description of their contribution.

Year 1

• Gender-based analysis report.
• Community plan (including an annex that documents the consultation process and findings).

Performance reporting requirements and timelines will be determined after the proposed project has been approved.
